worldwide instant messaging service, telegramannounced that an internal Web3 marketplace is coming soon. In it, the company aims to auction usernames associated with premium blockchains that it says are “definitely not NFTs.”
The new asset will be inspired by NFT smart contracts and will operate via the self-developed Open Network (TON) blockchain. But Telegram seemed to distance itself from the “NFT” moniker. As a result, we will modify the code to avoid the NFT association, just enough to classify it as a “different” product.
Through the marketplace, Telegram aims to monetize the use of premium usernames by launching a series of auctions to acquire the best virtual identities in town. If the scheme is successful, Telegram will branch out into other assets such as channels, emojis and stickers.
In recent months, more and more platforms have shaken off the term NFT, recognizing it as synonymous with social media outrage and digital native angry mobs. Therefore, as the technology continues to evolve, many companies will try to repackage their NFTs in ways that appease their user base.
