AAA game studio Gunzilla Games has raised $46 million in its latest investment round led by Republic Capital, Coin Journal reports. press release.
Building the foundation for Off The Grid
A new investment round will allow the studio to develop GunZ, a new platform that allows players to fully own their in-game possessions. It forms the basis for “off the grid” (OTG).
One of its standout features is the “in-game item trading”. Players will be able to purchase new in-game items from other players that were previously not possible.
Jump Crypto, Animoka, Kucoin Labs Among Investors
Key participants in the investment round include Jump Crypto, Raptor Group, Griffin Gaming Partners, Animoka Brands, Coinfund, Sima Capital, Kucoin Labs, Spartan Investment Group, Dominance Ventures and GSR.
Others include AlphaCrypto Capital, Blizzard, Gamegroove Capital, Digital Strategies, Morningstar Ventures, NGG, and Huobi Group, which helps maintain the project’s technical infrastructure.
Change the core gaming experience
Gunzilla never hides game features or progress behind a monetized paywall or sells NFTs directly to players. Trading is completely optional. The creators of the game believe that the new platform will change the player’s core her gaming experience.
Gunzilla co-founder and CEO Vlad Korolev said:
In today’s free-to-play games, paying doesn’t make it yours. You don’t own anything, and you can’t own anything. For example, a banned player may lose all items, even if the ban was accidental. Once you stop playing a free game, your investment in that game is gone. Reinvent the system and put power back in the hands of gamers.
Players can trade in-game clothing and accessories, customized weapons, unique characters they create, and more.
Brian Johnson, senior director at Republic Capital, said:
We believe in the primacy of free-to-play games, and we believe Gunzilla will take the lead by adding an optional crypto element to these games. The future of crypto gaming includes next-gen consoles, and Gunzilla believes this can easily happen.
