Cointelegraph: What are you doing today at Binance Blockchain Week Paris?

Maria Sharapova: I am very curious and want to understand how to bridge the incredible physical experiences I have had with my fans over the years. That’s what I’m most excited about because we’re finding ways to include experiences. Money is a topic that I feel we don’t talk about enough as women.

CT: Any plans to start an NFT project?

MS: I’ve been looking at this space for a few months now because I’m someone who prefers long-term opportunities. Storytelling is very important and a huge component of Web3. Thinking about the project in the long run, I think it tells the story better for both sides.

CT: Do you think NFTs can help increase fan engagement?

MS: absolutely. NFT is about finding ways to communicate with the right communities who care about what I do in different types of spaces. For example, I’ve been seen playing tennis on TV screens every week for years, but I retired a few years ago so I don’t have that platform on a daily basis. Now you can access your fans in a whole new way. I feel more involved with them instead of just watching them compete.

CT: As a female entrepreneur and former athlete, do you have plans to bring more women into Web3?

MS: I want women to have space to try out Web3. For example, when I told her she was 17, won My first Grand Slam and social media were never part of the experience. It took me years to get used to social media. I think Web3 is another area that we have to go out to learn from and grow from. As mentioned earlier, conversations about money, finance, cryptocurrencies and blockchain are taboo conversations. People may feel they shouldn’t speak up if they don’t know about these topics. But I think this should be the other way around. You can learn more by asking questions and participating.

CT: Why did you decide to invest in MoonPay?

MS: I want to diversify my portfolio. Initially, my investments were in consumer goods. For example, I invested early on in sunscreen brand Supergoop. I am now exposing myself to a whole new category.

CT: What do you see as the biggest challenges associated with Web3 and how can you overcome them?

MS: I hope the quality of the Web3 experience gets a little better and better, especially in the digital space.

CT: Any additional comments?

MS: NFT spaces are very interesting to me because they bridge my passion for fashion, interior design and creating spaces that are unique to individuals and communities. I became more interested in this space because it has more of a design perspective. It’s also a whole new source of income that both artists and women are discovering.
