Web3 designer Ric Burton said that Vitalik Buterin gave 10,000 Ethereum (ETH) in 2016 as compensation for Buton’s one month of work in 2014. thread he posted on twitter.
Burton’s story begins shortly after he was “kicked out of the profitable company” he co-founded in 2014. Burton said he heard Buterin say, I want to build a blockchain that can run programs, while listening to Bitcoin-related podcasts.
While admitting to being intrigued, Burton said he hasn’t changed his daily routine to pursue this “Ethereum thing.” But after hearing him twice more about Ethereum, Burton says he finally decided to go see Gavin Wood speak.
Burton wrote:
“I attended a rally and saw Gavin say that Facebook’s control over WhatsApp, Instagram and the entire social web is contrary to the principles the Internet was founded on.
He talked about trying to turn the pendulum back into decentralization. I had no idea what he was talking about. But I liked his jib cut. “
After the talk, Burton approached Wood and asked if ETH needed a designer. In response, Wood invited Burton to join the core ETH community. I was hooked, Burton says, leaving the UK to fly to the Bay Area to meet Buterin himself.
“We met, hopped on the train and talked a little bit about his plans. I could barely keep up.”
Burton said. According to his thread, the only time Burton spent with Buterin was on the train and car heading to San Francisco the next day. please. “
Burton then said he hadn’t seen Buterin in three years. According to Thread, Burton continued to design and adjust according to Wood’s feedback. But at the same time, Burton was running out of money. A month later, he said, Mr. Burton had to leave the community because he was “broken.”
After leaving the ETH circle, Burton went about his own business until two years later someone at the Ethereum Foundation contacted him wanting to pay ETH.
he writes:
I had no idea what that meant, but I liked the sound of getting rewarded.
So they were going to pay me ~$10,000.
Burton readily accepted, but no transfer took place. Since the price of ETH started to rise, Burton has continued to ask the foundation for his ETH.
Ultimately, Burton says, “I’ve hit a boiling point.” He sent a direct message to Buterin on Skype, asking for Ether. Burton said Buterin apologized for the delay and immediately sent the money.
Burton concludes by saying:
“This is the deal that changed my life.
I completely lost my mind. We had about $100,000 in liquidity from this amazing community.
I immediately sold a third of it to pay off my debt. What I finally found is community fluidity. “
