Nov. 11, NFT SteezThe bi-weekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expsito and Ray Salmond met with Thomas Webb, founder of the interoperable avatar game Worldwide Webb, to discuss interoperability integration in Web3 and the Metaverse.
By definition, interoperability is a feature of Web3 that allows products or systems to work seamlessly with other products or services across platforms. Webb defines interoperability simply as “creating a token, or a non-fungible token (NFT).” This is because at the most basic level no one but the creator can control it.
But how does interoperability work in Web3 today, and what are the potential implications?
Doing interoperability the “right” way
In discussing how interoperable applications can make a big impact, Webb described creativity in the eyes of the NFT community and brands.
Whether it’s “creating a product, creating an idea, creating an experience,” Webb enables the creation of intellectual property (IP) that allows users to demonstrate their loyalty and other means of accomplishment. I think we can show
Interoperability also appears to work hand in hand with the token gated experience, according to Webb. In essence, users get closer to the authentic experience by using the token they hold as their pass to access events and receive rewards.
This integration allows brands to collaborate with each other, reach users, and create exponential value. As Webb puts it, “infinite value.”

Cross-sector interoperability applications
“Interoperability can be the backbone of everything,” Webb said when asked about areas where interoperability could penetrate.
A more transparent and data-driven platform for the web will bring more collaboration and engagement among tech companies. Ultimately, Webb believes that concepts such as e-commerce, creative experiences, and even identity and self-sovereignty will be influenced by the concept of interoperability.
However, even though interoperability is Web3’s cornerstone, Webb has articulated the inevitable risks and challenges involved in creating a standard that suits all countries.
According to Webb, the existence of a centralized regulatory body may continue to stifle experimentation and growth.
