FBI seizes $260k of assets including ETH, Bored Ape following ZachXBT tip

According to forfeiture documents issued by the FBI, the FBI seized more than $260,000 in assets, including NFTs and cryptocurrencies. February 4th.

The document states that the FBI seized several assets from Brunswick, Maine resident Chase Senekal. The agency seized him 86.5678 ETH ($116,433) and two he NFTs: Bored Ape Yacht Club #9658 ($95,495) and Doodle #3114 ($9,361).

In addition to approximately $221,000 of crypto assets seized, the FBI also seized one non-crypto asset. It’s an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch worth $41,000.

The watch is not a crypto asset, but its purchase led directly to other seizures. Self-proclaimed crypto sleuth ZachXBT was responsible for starting the investigation, pointing out in his blog post: last september Senekal, also known as Horror (HZ), likely paid for the watch in cryptocurrency. The luxury watch purchase was “funded directly with money stolen from his hacked Twitter account,” he wrote. 1 tweet.

ZachXBT tracked a series of blockchain transactions and found that the account used to pay for the watch was linked to various hacks. The FBI seems to have paid attention to his findings fairly quickly, as weeks later he seized the items on October 24, 2022.

ZachXBT posted an update on the case yesterday. February 3rdHe wrote that he was “very happy” to say that the FBI seized the assets thanks to the original thread.

According to ZachXBT’s previous statement, Senekal was involved in a multi-million dollar scheme that compromised over 600 Discord servers and over a dozen Twitter accounts. On February 3, he highlighted various accounts affected by the hack, including accounts belonging to the NFT project JRNY club and animator DeeKay Kwon.

The FBI has also been implicated in several unrelated cryptocurrency cases. In January alone, there were developments involving North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group, cryptocurrency exchange Bitzlato, and Mango Market exploiter Avraham Eisenberg.
