Virtua was co-founded by Gary Bracey, a BAFTA-nominated gaming industry veteran with over 35 years of experience building top-notch games. Having witnessed the rise of his console games, the revolution of his mobile games, and the explosion of interest in esports, Bracey is well aware of the changing paradigms in the gaming world.
of crypto slate Akiba met with Bracey and Virtua’s CSO, Ash Mohammed, to dig deeper into the project and discuss the evolution of web3 games with industry veterans. When asked for his take on blockchain’s role in gaming, Bracey compared it to other innovations that have revolutionized the gaming space.
Just as many ignored the potential of home gaming consoles in the 80s and thought mobile games “weren’t real games” in the 2000s, Bracey believes that current reservations about web3 games will eventually end. I commented that it would go away.
According to Bracey, those who disdain blockchain games are no different than those who believe mobile phones will never have a significant share of the gaming market.
Traditional game developers didn’t embrace mobile, leading to industry fragmentation and the rise of new mobile-first game studios. The same developers aren’t “terribly happy about NFTs and the metaverse,” says Bracedy.
Bracey, who is also the chairman of Virtua, believes blockchain is the next evolution in gaming and will open up entirely new ways for people to consume interactive content.
Blockchain will fundamentally change the way people play video games in the years to come, but it wont happen overnight.
Furthermore, Virtua’s chairman went on to affirm that “Blockchain will further enhance these experiences and build communities in ways we could never have imagined.”
Based on 35 years of experience in the industry, Bracey argued that “it is not necessarily the content itself that is affected by web3”, but “the bits behind it.” The trading element of NFTs will be a big part of this evolution as gamers stop “renting” and owning skins.
Ash Mohammed, Virtua’s CSO, explained the high level of community engagement seen within Virtua’s player base, building on Bracey’s points. Mohammed explained that Virtua players are creating their own guilds and micro-him communities based on niche interests such as his racing cars, his piloting jets, his clubs of yachts.
Interestingly, Mohammed explained how Virtua embraced these communities by incorporating them into the game as small factions to encourage community ownership and development.
Virtua also leverages blockchain to enable the open potential of the Metaverse, integrating Virtua’s in-game resources to build and create within other game projects. The future of the metaverse is not closed communities, but open and collaborative working relationships between metaverse projects.
According to Bracey, “It’s going to be a collaboration for it to work.” Virtua is “a tool for creating your own self-expression… an extension of your personality” and “must be open”.
